An international meeting point, a house of Lutheran worship, and a place for restful meditation in the heart of the city – that is what we’d like our Alte Nikolaikirche to remain, well into the future. So in June 2001 we created the „Patronatsverein Alte Nikolaikirche Frankfurt/Main e.V.“ (the Endowment of Frankfurt’s Old St. Nicholas‘ Church), with the avowed goal of sustaining our church home in Frankfurt’s historic Römerberg.
Organized by the Executive Committee of St. Paul’s Congregation, the Endowment aims to keep up the physical structure and furnishment of the church building, as well as to help support the music that makes ours a special house of worship.
In addition to housing the worship activities of St. Paul’s Congregation, our church building is a much-visited tourist attraction and provides many who work downtown with a religious space for private reflection. Thus St. Paul’s Congregation is quite small relative to the number of people who use and benefit from the Alte Nikolaikirche. The congregation receives some tax-financed support, as do all Lutheran congregations in Germany. Our church house’s unique location, and our determination that it should remain accessible, demand greater means than St. Paul’s congregation can provide. The discrepancy has loomed ever larger over the years, especially as the Alte Nikolaikirche is the only Lutheran church in Frankfurt that stays open all day.
The Endowment, a non-profit association, seeks to make those means available. Its mission is to spend donated funds and capital gains to pay for the additional musicians and administrative staff who help the Alte Nikolaikirche fulfill its many functions in the City of Frankfurt.
The Endowment accepts direct cash or financial donations. We are always especially pleased to be remembered by current and former Frankfurters, as well as by friends of St. Paul’s congregation and the Alte Nikolaikirche, not to mention Frankfurt’s many companies and institutions.
Contributions of materials or labor are also joyfully welcomed.
Donation aknowledgements are gladly issued.
Cordial thanks for your gifts!
